History: Lunar Legend, as a gameboy release by Ubisoft rather than the original game developers, adds, gets rid of and changes a lot of plot points from the original game (it's a remake of a remake, basically). I can't find any good synopsis of the gameboy canon, so I'll be writing my own. A basic overview of the world is here.

Nash appears first in Burg, a town on the small isle of Caldor which happens to be near the dwelling of the White Dragon. He has come to take the White Dragon's trial in order to start on a journey to become a Dragonmaster and wants a guide to take him to White Dragon Shrine. Alex, Luna and Ramus, three Burg natives about Nash's age, offer to guide him through the Weird Woods. They fight their way through the woods together, though Nash several times makes clear that he feels they are way below him and calls them 'bumpkins' and 'hicks'.

They find several stone slabs in the forest, written in a language only Nash can read. Deciphering the clues, they take it to mean that Luna needs to sing to open the stone gate guarding the White Dragon Shrine. When Luna sings, Nash is amazed -- he didn't think that would actually work. They make their way inside and both Nash and Alex take the White Dragon trial. While we aren't shown the entirety of Nash's trial, we know that he asserts he would use the Dragonmaster's power to help the whole world, but falters as he says it and doesn't impress the White Dragon as much as Alex does.

He leaves Burg soon after for the southern town of Saith, which has a port back to the mainland. While in an inn there, he makes the mistake of bragging about his status as an Elite Magic Guild member (which isn't actually true -- he's an apprentice, albeit gifted) to a group of pirates. They kidnap him, intending to use him for ransom to the Guild, and tie him to the mast of their ship. Luckily, he is rescued by Alex, Luna and Ramus, who are making their way to the mainland so Alex can take the trials of the other dragons and continue his quest to become a Dragonmaster.

The four of them sail to Meribia, a big city on the mainland and a hub of commerce and travel. Nash thanks the group again, albeit a little grudgingly (he's still not over how backwoods they are), and goes to meet with a fortune teller named Royce. We don't see all of his conversation, but it's implied that he's speaking to her about Luna's singing abilities and their magical properties.

While Alex, Luna and Ramus are down in the sewers pursuing a thief, Nash is AWOL, likely still talking to Royce or taking care of other affairs. He encounters the group again in the thief's old shop, and admits to being impressed by their abilities. He offers to bring them with him to Vane, the magic floating city, to meet Ghaleon (one of the four great heroes of the world).

To get to Vane, one must use the Transmission Spring, a large stone which corresponds to a similar stone on Vane. The group is all set to go, but Nash realizes once he steps onto the stone that the magic flow that usually powers it has been disrupted. This results in a bad teleportation, leading not to Vane but to the ruins under Vane. Nash decides that the drain on the magic power must be close and that the only way to fix it is to find the drain and plug it. He's feeling sluggish and heavy, and notes that Luna is too, adding to his evidence that she has magical ability.

They make their way through the underground, fighting off monsters all the while, and eventually encounter what is termed in the game 'EvilMist'-- a wind elemental who is sucking up and diverting the magic. Luna is too weak to fight, so Alex and Nash fight it together. This is perhaps the final nail in the coffin of Nash finally deciding that Alex isn't just another 'bumpkin'. From this point on, that term takes on a certain tinge of affection when in reference to the other members of the party.

Now that the magic is flowing properly, the three of them could easily make it to Vane and to the Magic Guild. But Luna is still feeling bad, so they make a pit stop at a Shrine of Althena first to let her recuperate. While she's sleeping, Nash speaks to Alex and asks if he's sure he and Luna couldn't use magic back in Burg. He's fairly certain that Luna has latent magic ability. As soon as she's feeling better, he takes them both to Vane (the Spring is now working just fine).

He gets Luna an appointment with Ghaleon while Alex waits and explores the Guild. When Alex discovers the room of Mia, the daughter of the Magic Guild head, Nash rushes in to break it up. He tells Mia that he's very sorry and they're merely country folk and have no concept of propriety. It's clear that he and Mia know each other and furthermore that he's both enamored with her and protective of her. He then drags Alex away to Ghaleon's office, where Ghaleon confirms his theory that Luna has latent magical ability. Ghaleon awakens it, or rather helps remove the block on it, and then sends Alex, Luna and Nash away to the town of Lann to investigate a person who claims to be a Dragonmaster.

This is where I'll be taking him from-- right before the beginning of the journey to Lann (he'll be coming in in a room lifted out of the Magic Guild headquarters). Because of this, he doesn't yet know some very important plot points (that Ghaleon is actually the evil magic emperor, that the Magic Guild head he knew has been a fake for some time).

Personality: Nash is a powerhouse of personality. He's imperious, demanding, smart, and more than a little fiery if you get him angry.

He has a rather large superiority complex, as evidenced in his history by his focus on how his adventure companions are just country folk. He believes he, by contrast, is the creme of the crop of educated civilization. To be fair, he isn't without cause: he's a student at the Magic Guild, skilled both in magic and general scholarly pursuits. He knows at least one ancient magical language and can hold his own in a fight. In short, he has plenty of amazing talents that fuel his vanity (not to mention a truly fabulous haircut).

Of course, this superiority complex means he tends to look down on others and explain away their mistakes by saying 'oh, they're just stupid country folk'. It takes him quite a while of fighting alongside Alex and, indeed, being rescued by him a few times, to admit that Alex is capable in his own right and to start warming up to him. He also becomes a lot more friendly once he realizes that Alex may have magic powers of his own, pointing out that his wind-based sword attacks don't require an actual sword and so can't be weapon-based.

Speaking of getting rescued, what Nash has in magic and booksmarts, he lacks in street smarts. Despite his magic powers, he's easily captured by a band of pirates because he's too caught up in talking about himself to realize that they're pirates and there's a lot more of them then there are of him. His bragging has the high potential to get him in trouble (his 'win' animation is shaking his finger at the defeated enemy, something I don't think many enemies would think was endearing), as does his belief that he's great at everything when he really may not be. Despite this, he recovers from failure quickly, and is excellent at making 'oh I meant to do that' excuses. The very first thing he does after being cut down from where he's tied to the pirate mast is straighten his hair, as though he's aware they're still in danger but simply isn't bothered because he's Too Cool.

He's not entirely a shallow know-it-all, however. He's fiercely loyal once that loyalty is earned, as evidenced by how he treats the more shy but no less powerful Mia. If you talk to one of the guards in the Magic Guild after meeting Mia, they express hesitation about her being the next head because she's so unlike her mother; Nash replies that he thinks Mia is going to be a great head of the Guild. When he thinks Mia is threatened in any way, he immediately flares up and is ready to defend her, whether she's actually in any danger or not. He's also in love with her, something he still can't admit to her at the end of the game likely because of her station and the fact that he's a little starstruck by her.

Abilities & physical limitations: Nash is a Magic Guild student. His specialty is electricity-based magic, both offensive and defensive. In general he can also sense magic and the flow of magic around him -- he can even tell when the source of magic is being diverted from where it is supposed to be going, and can feel magic in people who may not know it exists themselves (Luna, for instance). I'll put up a permissions post for this. Physically, Nash isn't terribly strong. He can take hits, but he's very bad at dishing them out without the aid of his magic or a magic-imbued weapon. In a fight he's better off hanging back behind the hardier, stronger combatants.
